You need two things for a website: a domain name and hosting on a server. If you are just starting out, there are tons of hosting services out there. Most are inclusive packages, meaning they will register your domain name for you and provide the hosting. All you have to do is upload the content, and you are all set. It is also possible to have your domain registered with one registrar (such as godaddy.com) and have your content hosted on another site. Just make sure your domain points to the IP of the site where your content is and your DNS (name servers) are configured to the hosting site.

If you are looking to transfer an existing site, the first thing to do is to transfer the domain name. Choose a registrar that is ICANN-accredited after starting an account, they will contact your current registrar and make the transfer request and register it. Once that is done, upload your content to the new hosting site. Finally, change the DNS (name servers) to the new hosting account. Your hosting company will provide you with the specific DNS entries to use. The domain transfer process can take up to a day or two, and after updating your DNS entries, it usually takes about 4-6 hours to propogate fully throughout the internet. That's it!
