well, first things first, you need to see how much RAM you have. Right click on 'My Computer' > Properties > General Tab and it should list your info. If you have anything under 512MB, then I seriously suggest adding a chip. This can be done quickly and easily. For a free online scan to determine what type of RAM you have and a list of compatible chips, go to http://www.crucial.com and use their system scanner.

The next step is to get rid of startup crap you don't need and services you aren't using. The easiest way to monitor startup items is by using Windows Defender. Go to Tools > Software Explorer > Startup Programs and remove anything that you don't need. You may have to do a google search to see what everything is.

For services, click the Start Menu > Run > type 'service.msc' and then use the interface to disable services that you don't need. However, be careful as some are integral to the system and should not be shut off. I recommend using this guide: http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

And last but not least, you can adjust the performance settings on your computer. Right click 'My Computer' > Advanced Tab > Performance Settings > Adjust for best performance. You can also click the advanced tab here and increase your virtual memory, a portion of your hard drive that you designate to act as RAM.

Hope this helps; let me know if you have any problems.
